Software Engineer – Hardware Control (x2)

Dunfermline, Scotland




We are currently looking for a Software Engineer specialising in Hardware Control to join our Research and Development team.

You will be based within one of our cross functional teams working together with systems, verification, and FPGA engineers to develop the software driving the optomechanical systems at the heart of our advanced new products.

Your role is to be a systems thinker who is comfortable working across a wide range of technologies and thrives on developing new knowledge beyond software to better understand the physical systems you will be working with.

You are happy to turn your hand to a range of technologies including C# on Windows, C++ on ARM Linux and Python in the test system.

Some of the challenges you could expect within your first year are:

  • Optimise transfer time for high-resolution images from capture by embedded processor to local preview processing by Windows application to remote server-side full processing and storage.
  • Improve manufacturing and field engineering tools to reduce production and maintenance costs.
  • Develop new approaches to accelerate system workflow to improve the patient experience.
  • Modernise the creation and deployment of system images for devices in production.



  • Develop, maintain, and enhance new and existing software for medical devices.
  • Ensure build and test infrastructure meets the needs of product development.
  • Apply standard software development quality practices that meet relevant medical device standards.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in other groups such as manufacturing and IT to facilitate effective delivery of our products.



  • Strong technical background. Most likely a degree in a STEM subject.
  • Commercial experience of C# and/or C++.
  • Scripting experience (Python, PowerShell etc.).
  • Experience working within an Agile team and good knowledge of agile methodologies.
  • Practical experience with hardware control or interfacing (Industrial Control Systems, IoT sensors, Automotive etc.)
