Over the last 12 months we have made great progress in developing a new generation of products that will use cutting-edge technologies to drive our mission to transform eye care and are now looking for a Test Development Engineer Principal to continue the momentum, bringing your experience and ideas with you.

You and the role

Since September we have hired 3 Test Development Engineers and now need someone to lead this newly formed team. Our engineers are designing and implementing robust software and hardware tests and all have strong experience with Python, C++, LabView.

A couple of them have previous experience within medical devices, but the automotive, aerospace and defence sectors also cross over well to our field.

Personal characteristics

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who has experience of leading a team and can navigate the challenges that can bring, be it from a technical or team dynamics perspective.

An easy communicator, you should be able to go between the various teams at Optos, garnering support from others when needed and successfully push projects along.

Our best leaders guide with good humour, technical nous and culture an environment of support and continued learning; they know when to chip in and when to hold back.

Above all, you will be naturally curious and want to interrogate our systems, test for weakness, have an eye on reliability all while getting the best out of your team.

Technical skills

We would like you to have strong experience in building test systems from the ground up and this should be from a manufacturing environment, not web-based testing.

A broad understanding of testing/ integrating complex systems in a manufacturing environment, along with a mix of hardware/ software are the foundation for success in this role. 

Experience of test, integration, development, tooling and processes with one or more of Electronical/ Optical/ Mechanical Systems/Sub-systems would be ideal. 

You will be hands-on and able to muck in with the team when needed, but ultimately be able to take a bird’s eye view of tasks as a whole and make decisions based on your technical, commercial and leadership experience.

• Proven leadership experience from line management
• Strong test development professional from medical, automotive or defence/aerospace
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Software Engineering or related field
• Continuous Test, Integration, Development, Tooling and Processes
• Excellent communicator who is comfortable working cross-functionally
